Burewala officially declared and know as city of Education. Burewala derives its name from Chah Boreywala which was established prior to 1912. Burewala is an old Mandi and situated on Dehli Multan Road River Sutlej crosses Burewala near Jamlera and Sahuka. Derbar of Dewan Chawli Mashickh is also situated in Dewan Sahib at a distance of 18 km. from Burewala.In the very beginning it was just a jungle which was 'humanized' by local tribes called "Langrial". When the Pakpattan canal started its operations in this area, agriculture of the area developed and the jungle was cut to make cultivation fields
And so people started to settle in villages. As this area was in 'Eastern Canal Division' so it was named village no. 439/EB (E.B.= Eastern Bar). In the Northern side of Burewala, there are still signs of an old water canal which is now called Sukh Bias. Burewala is known for the invention of three wheel motorbike rickshaw known as Chandgari.”

Asia's largest textile industry was in the city of Burewala, owned by Dawood Group of Industries called (BTM) Burewala Textile Mills, which is now known as Lawrencepur Limited.Burewala is surrounded by boundaries of few industrial and agricultural cities (e.g. Vehari, Arifwala, Chichawatni, Hasilpur, Chishtian)
Burewala has an all seasonal grain market in the area and it is a major business center. Other business activities include 7 Flour Mills, 50+ rice mills, 50+ cotton ginning factories and about 250+ oil mills and an extensively growing network of rice husking/processing mills, cotton ginneries & flour mills. It is Pakistan's second largest cotton-seed-cake producing city (after Rahim YarKhan).

Dawood Lawrencepur Limited (formerly known as Burewala Textile Mills Limited) is also located in the city with an installed ring spinning capacity of 216,000 spindles (the unit production was stopped by the group management due to some unavoidable circumstances in 2008). Three PVC products factories are also situated in the city.
